PIKE COUNTY, Ill. — A $9 million Illinois Department of Transportation shoulder improvement project on Interstate 72 and Interstate 172 is scheduled to begin Thursday, October 1, affecting motorists in southern Adams County and northern Pike County.

The work extends along I-72 and I-172 between Illinois 57 and Illinois 96. IDOT says the project will include resurfacing highway shoulders and widening emergency median crossovers. The work is part of the state’s ongoing Rebuild Illinois transportation program.

Motorists should expect traffic to be directed through work zones using signs and flaggers, and IDOT is advising drivers to allow additional travel time and use alternate routes when practical. The construction zone affects a major east-west and north-south connection used by travelers between Pike County, Quincy and surrounding communities.

Work is expected to pause during the winter and resume in the spring, with completion projected for next summer. IDOT’s current multi-year highway program also lists shoulder repair and miscellaneous improvements on I-72 from I-172 east of Illinois 96 and on I-172 from I-72 south of Illinois 57.
