WEST CENTRAL, IL -- Drivers across West Central Illinois dealt with dangerous travel conditions as a blowing dust event swept through the region, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous road conditions.
The dust storm went through the area during the daytime hours Monday , at times cutting visibility to near zero in open rural areas. The conditions were driven by a combination of strong winds and dry soil, allowing dust to be lifted and carried across roadways.
Motorists reported rapidly changing visibility, with clear skies quickly turning into dense walls of dust. The conditions made travel especially dangerous on open highways and rural roads where wind exposure is higher.
Officials warned drivers during the event to slow down, use headlights, and avoid travel if possible as the dust moved through. While no major incidents were immediately confirmed locally, events like this can quickly lead to crashes due to sudden loss of visibility.
