FIFTY YEARS OF COMPASSION: NIEBUR FUNERAL HOMES' LEGACY OF SERVING PIKE COUNTY
Updated: Oct 13

PITTSFIELD, Ill. — For half a century, Niebur Funeral Homes has stood beside Pike County families through some of life’s most difficult moments. What began in 1976 as a hometown funeral home at 530 West Adams Street in Pittsfield has grown into a trusted local institution, with the addition of the Barry chapel in 2003.
The story of Niebur Funeral Homes is also the story of Mike and Jennifer Niebur and the tradition of personal service they built together. Mike was a seventh-generation Pike County resident, a 1972 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science.
His roots in the community ran far deeper than his profession. For 32 years, Mike served with the Pittsfield Fire Department, including 18 years as a captain and fire-prevention and education officer. He was also active in Pittsfield First United Methodist Church, youth sports and community organizations, becoming a familiar face well beyond the doors of the funeral home.
Mike’s unexpected death in August 2013 at the age of 59 was felt throughout Pike County. The community had lost not only a funeral director, but a firefighter, volunteer, friend and neighbor whose life had been woven into the community he served.
Jennifer Niebur continued carrying forward the tradition she and Mike had built together. Through the years, that commitment has remained centered on helping families with personal attention, compassion and dignity during some of their hardest days.
Today, Niebur Funeral Homes offers traditional funeral and memorial services, graveside services, burial and cremation options, personalized celebrations of life, photo and video tributes, online memorials, advance planning and grief support. The funeral home also provides continuing grief resources for families after a service has ended.
That local connection has remained an important part of the Niebur story. From Pittsfield to Barry, the funeral home has served generations of area families while maintaining the personal, hometown approach on which Mike and Jennifer built the business.
In 2026, Niebur Funeral Homes marks 50 years of service. Five decades after its founding, the name remains closely connected with Pike County, not simply as a business, but as part of the community itself.
Niebur Funeral Homes is also a proud sponsor of the Chapel Report on B97.5 WBBA, helping RiverNewsLive and WBBA provide local families with daily funeral and memorial information.
