MORGAN COUNTY SHERIFF MIKE CARMODY TO RETIRE AT END OF NOVEMBER AFTER FOUR DECADES
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — Morgan County Sheriff Mike Carmody is preparing to retire at the end of November after 40 years with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, closing a law-enforcement career that began long before he was first elected sheriff.
Carmody has served two terms as sheriff since taking office in 2018. Earlier positions included corrections officer and chief deputy, a role he held for approximately 12 years while serving under former Sheriff Randy Duvendack.
The sheriff’s tenure included facility improvements at the county jail and courthouse. Projects included air-conditioning work, jail-cell improvements, replacement or upgrades of control panels and a generator, changes intended to support safer and more reliable operations.
Chief Deputy Jamie Jackson, who served with Carmody through both of the sheriff’s terms, is running unopposed to become the next Morgan County sheriff. Jackson is expected to be sworn in on December 1, following Carmody’s retirement.
Carmody has expressed confidence in Jackson’s ability to lead the department, describing their different perspectives as useful during their work together. The transition will bring a new elected sheriff while retaining a leader familiar with the department’s daily responsibilities.
Morgan County residents will see the change following the November 3 general election. This story concerns an announced retirement and succession, not an incident or criminal investigation.
