PITTSFIELD, Ill. — Pike County officials are working toward a 2027 budget that would avoid an increase in the county’s overall property tax levy, even as the county faces pressure from insurance costs and other operating expenses.

During the October 14 County Board meeting, members discussed the financial implications of renewing insurance coverage and seeking alternative bids. Board leadership has identified a zero-percent levy increase as a goal rather than a final adopted budget decision.

County officials acknowledged that controlling the levy could require reductions in spending, additional revenue or savings elsewhere in county operations. Departments face competing needs as officials prepare the coming year’s financial plan.

Insurance costs remain a significant variable. The board authorized competing bids for property and casualty coverage and separately directed the county to seek employee health insurance proposals for 2027, allowing it to compare options before committing to future expenses.

The county has not finalized its 2027 budget or levy. Further consideration will be necessary before either is adopted.
