PITTSFIELD, Ill. — The Pittsfield Saukees are the 2026 Pike County Conference volleyball tournament champions after defeating Barry Western in two tight sets Thursday night, October 22, on Pittsfield’s home floor.

The Saukees captured the opening set 25-23 and closed out the championship 25-22. Each set was decided by just a few points, and the final score did not reflect a one-sided match. Pittsfield had to withstand strong early play from a Western team that arrived on an eight-match winning streak.

Barry Western entered the championship after a hard-fought victory over Payson earlier in the evening. The Wildcats won the first set of that match, lost the second 25-22, then recovered to win the deciding set. That result sent Western directly into its matchup with the host Saukees.

Western started sharply against Pittsfield, taking a 4-0 lead in the first set behind Myra Sheppard’s play. Pittsfield steadily closed the gap. The match remained close until a kill from Natalie Capps helped the Saukees finish the first set with a 25-23 win.

The second set brought more of the same back-and-forth action. Pittsfield established a 16-13 advantage, but Western kept pressure on the Saukees and forced them to earn the closing points. Pittsfield ultimately finished the set 25-22, sealing a two-set sweep and the conference tournament crown.

The title was particularly satisfying for Pittsfield because Barry Western had beaten the Saukees earlier in the season. Thursday’s result reversed that outcome on the conference tournament’s biggest night and brought Western’s winning streak to an end.

MaxPreps listed Pittsfield at 24-10 after the championship and Barry Western at 24-6. Those records underscore the level of competition between the two programs. Both teams entered the evening with strong seasons behind them.

The conference championship also gives the Saukees a strong finish to this stage of their fall schedule. For Barry Western, the narrow margins in both sets demonstrated how close the Wildcats came to extending their run.
