CALHOUN COUNTY — The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has announced the appointment of Chris Barnes as its new Chief Deputy, bringing to the role a longtime public servant with decades of experience in law enforcement, fire service, and leadership.

Barnes has worked in public safety since the late 1990s, serving in both law enforcement and fire protection roles across Southern Illinois. Over the course of his career, he spent 20 years in the fire service, including 15 years of active duty, while also working as a police officer and holding multiple supervisory positions. His leadership background includes serving as a Fire Department Captain, Security Supervisor, mechanic foreman, and Chief of Police, in addition to experience as a mechanic, construction worker, security professional, and refinery utility operator.

A graduate of Granite City High School, Barnes has deep ties to Southern Illinois, including time spent in the Lake of Egypt area and the Mitchell region. Sheriff Zach Hardin said Barnes’ broad experience and community-focused approach make him a strong fit for Calhoun County’s rural law enforcement needs. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Barnes is committed to continuing a style of policing centered on service, visibility, and connection with residents.

Barnes and his wife have lived a rural lifestyle for several years, and he is the father of three adult children. The Sheriff’s Office encouraged residents to welcome Barnes as he begins his duties, noting that he is looking forward to serving the people of Calhoun County and being an active part of the community.
