PITTSFIELD, Ill. — Photos circulating online appear to show political signs supporting Ashley Greger being damaged, adding another ugly chapter to an already tense political atmosphere surrounding the Pike County Clerk’s Office.
The images show signs that appear to have been deliberately damaged. At this time, RiverNewsLive has seen no evidence identifying who was responsible, and there is no indication connecting the vandalism to any candidate, campaign, county employee or supporter.
The incident comes amid continuing turmoil surrounding the Clerk’s Office. Current Pike County Clerk Natalie Roseberry is not seeking another term, while the race to determine who succeeds her has become increasingly contentious, including the candidacy of Brenda DeSpain.
The political environment has also been complicated by recent controversy involving Roseberry and her office. RiverNewsLive previously reported that Roseberry notified county officials that she and members of her staff would no longer participate in county committee meetings, a move that has generated additional questions and criticism surrounding communication and accountability within county government.
Now, with campaign signs apparently being damaged, the political temperature appears to be rising even further.
Regardless of which candidate someone supports, destroying another person’s campaign signs does nothing to improve Pike County government or answer the legitimate questions voters have about the future of the Clerk’s Office.
There is currently no evidence suggesting that Greger’s opponents, DeSpain, Roseberry, or anyone associated with the Clerk’s Office had anything to do with the damaged signs. Any suggestion otherwise would be speculation.
What the photographs do show is that an already heated election season in Pike County is becoming increasingly unpleasant — and with the Clerk’s race still ahead, voters will be watching closely to see whether the campaign remains focused on qualifications, transparency and the future operation of the office.
RiverNewsLive will continue following developments in the Pike County Clerk’s race.
