Charline M. Smith


Charline M. Smith, age 70, of Hull, Illinois, passed away Friday, February 13, 2026, at Barry Healthcare & Senior Living in Barry.

Charline was born September 10, 1955, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Robert Cooper and Rose Watkins. She married Kevin Smith on July 4, 1986, at Calvary Baptist Church in Hannibal, Missouri.


She earned her LPN license and spent decades working in the nursing field, including employment at nursing homes, doctor’s offices, the Quincy Veterans Home, and providing in-home care for families throughout the region. Charline was known for her dedication to caring for others and found her greatest fulfillment in in-home caregiving.


Charline was deeply committed to her faith and was active in worship at The Crossing. She enjoyed traveling with her family, riding in the semi with her husband Kevin, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also a Kansas City Chiefs fan.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Shearer Cemetery in New Canton.



Janis D. Chapman


Janis D. Chapman, age 79, of White Hall, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at her residence.


She was born July 17, 1946, in Patterson, Illinois, to Walter and Ruby Pence. She married Ralph Chapman on December 4, 1976, in White Hall.


Janis was a longtime member of White Hall First Baptist Church, where she served in numerous roles over the years, including Sunday School superintendent and treasurer.


She worked as a beautician in White Hall for 55 years and also served as librarian for the White Hall Township Library.


She enjoyed reading, knitting dish rags, and traveling with friends.


Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2026, at 11 a.m. at White Hall First Baptist Church in White Hall, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson.



Marjorie R. Cross


Marjorie R. Cross, age 87, of Quincy and formerly of New Canton, Illinois, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 2026, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

She was born July 24, 1938, in Fairfield, Illinois, to Herman and Lillie Mayfield. She married Robert Samuel Cross on October 14, 1965, in Springfield. He preceded her in death in 2025.


Marjorie dedicated her life to caring for others, both in her home and professionally. She worked for 30 years as a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes in Barry and Pittsfield. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with family, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pittsfield.


A visitation will be held Friday, February 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home located at 401 South Schuyler Avenue in Griggsville, followed by a graveside service at 11 a.m. at Griggsville Cemetery.



Lyndle L. Scranton


Lyndle L. Scranton, age 100, of rural Nebo, Illinois, passed away Wednesday evening, February 11, 2026, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield.


He was born February 23, 1925, in Nebo to Leroy and Verna Scranton. He married Ollie May McAfee on September 25, 1948, in Pittsfield.


Lyndle worked as a lineman for the Wabash Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1989. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1984 and was known as a devoted family man who cared deeply for his community.


Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home located at 403 South Main Street in Pleasant Hill, with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Nebo Cemetery.
