Dangerous Heat Expected To Continue Across Twin Pikes Through Friday

PITTSFIELD, Ill. — Dangerous heat and humidity are expected to stay locked in across the Twin Pikes through the end of the week, with heat index values climbing into the 100s and only limited relief expected before the Fourth of July weekend.

The National Weather Service in St. Louis says heat headlines have been extended through Friday evening, with several days of heat index values above 100 degrees expected across the region. In parts of the greater St. Louis forecast area, heat index values could reach 105 to 112 degrees during the afternoon hours.

For Pike County, Illinois, the National Weather Service forecast calls for highs in the lower 90s with heat index values up to around 105 degrees. Farther south and west, communities in the broader St. Louis region could feel even hotter, with some areas seeing heat index readings near or above 110.

Forecasters say the stretch of hot and humid weather could increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for older adults, young children, people with health conditions, outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on neighbors, relatives, and pets. Anyone who has to work outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.

Pet owners are also being reminded not to leave animals in vehicles, even for a short time. Hot pavement can also burn paws quickly, so walks should be limited to the cooler parts of the day.

The heat is expected to remain a concern through Friday, with some uncertainty on rain chances later in the week. Until a meaningful break arrives, local residents should treat the heat as a serious safety issue and plan accordingly.
