SCHUYLER COUNTY SHERIFF BILL REDSHAW TO RETIRE NOVEMBER 30 AFTER THREE TERMS
RUSHVILLE, Ill. — Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Redshaw says he will retire November 30, bringing to a close three terms leading the county sheriff's office.
Redshaw was first elected sheriff in 2014. The Illinois Sheriffs' Association lists his service in Schuyler County and identifies Jeffrey J. Boyd as the department's chief deputy.
The longtime sheriff is preparing to leave office shortly after his 81st birthday. His retirement comes amid changes in law enforcement technology, training and the rules governing policing across Illinois.
During his years in office, the profession has moved from older radio communications and paper-heavy procedures to body-worn cameras, in-car computers and more extensive digital records. Redshaw has spoken positively about the role cameras can play in documenting encounters.
The sheriff's office provides law enforcement services across a largely rural county, where deputies must cover significant distances and where coordination with neighboring agencies is important for emergency response.
Schuyler County voters will choose between Jeff Boyd, a Republican, and Heath White, an independent, in the November 3 general election. The successful candidate will take over after Redshaw's departure.
Redshaw has indicated he intends to remain active in the Schuyler County community after retirement. The election will determine who next oversees the sheriff's office, its deputies and the county jail.
