PITTSFIELD — Residents across the Twin Pikes region are being urged to use caution Wednesday as elevated fire danger conditions are expected, especially north of Interstate 70, including parts of Pike County, Illinois and Pike County, Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity could create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday. Dry grasses, agricultural fields, and crop debris are particularly vulnerable, and any fire that starts in these areas could become difficult to control.
Officials warn that erratic fire behavior is possible under these conditions, meaning fires could spread quickly and unpredictably. Residents are asked to avoid open flames, use extreme caution with cigarettes and outdoor equipment, and postpone any unnecessary burning. Authorities stress that any required burning should be left to trained professionals.
Fire officials say even small sparks can ignite dry vegetation during periods of elevated fire danger. Residents are encouraged to stay alert to changing conditions throughout the day and take steps now to reduce the risk of accidental fires.
