CALHOUN COUNTY — Ferry service in Calhoun County has fully reopened following a new update issued Friday, reversing an earlier partial-closure notice and restoring all major river crossings.
On February 12, officials reported that the Kampsville Ferry had reopened while the Brussels Ferry remained closed, limiting options for drivers traveling across the Illinois River. At that time, the Kampsville Ferry resumed operations as a free, 24-hour service operated by the Illinois Department of Transportation, connecting Illinois Route 108 in Greene County with Calhoun County near Kampsville.
However, a February 13 update confirms that ferry access has now been fully restored. Officials announced that the Brussels Ferry is open, joining the Kampsville Ferry and the Golden Eagle Ferry, which are also operating. All three crossings are free, 24-hour IDOT services providing essential transportation links for residents, commuters, farm traffic, emergency services, and weekend travelers.
The Brussels Ferry crosses the Illinois River between Illinois Route 100 near Grafton in Jersey County and Calhoun County, offering a direct route toward Brussels. The Golden Eagle Ferry also provides a key river crossing for the region. With all ferries now open, drivers once again have full access to primary routes into and out of Calhoun County.
Ferry service remains vital in Calhoun County due to the lack of bridges across large sections of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Officials continue to urge motorists to monitor ferry status updates, particularly during winter and early spring when river conditions, ice, and maintenance needs can quickly affect operations.
