SPRINGFIELD, IL — Applications are now open for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, for some eligible Illinois households seeking help with heating and utility costs.

Beginning October 1, households may apply if they include an adult age 60 or older, a person with a disability, a child age 5 or younger, or if the household is facing utility disconnection.

All other income-eligible Illinois households may begin applying November 1.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through August 13, 2027, or until available funding is exhausted. State officials are encouraging eligible propane customers to apply early, before winter demand and prices increase.

Residents can learn more about eligibility and locate their local Community Action Agency through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

State Senator Jil Tracy shared the reminder as the fall heating season gets underway across western Illinois.
