GREENE COUNTY -- A Marine veteran is being credited with jumping into action to help students following a school bus rollover in Greene County.
Kendrick Ballard, a North Greene alum and Marine veteran, was driving near the scene when he came upon a school bus that had overturned. Without hesitation, Ballard pulled over and began assisting students and staff, helping them safely exit the bus and move away from the roadway before emergency crews arrived.
Authorities say 11 students and one staff member were injured in the crash. Most of the injuries were reported as minor, with students described as shaken and some suffering scrapes and minor bleeding.
Ballard worked to guide students out of the rear emergency exit and away from danger, while first responders and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene. Local healthcare providers later praised the quick and compassionate response from those involved.
The incident marks at least the second time Ballard has stepped in during an emergency. He was previously recognized for helping rescue individuals from a flooded vehicle in an earlier incident.
Officials continue to investigate the crash, which occurred along U.S. 67 near White Hall.
