CARROLLTON, Ill. — Rescue crews freed a man Monday evening after the mower he was operating slid into a pond in rural Greene County, leaving him unable to get free on his own.

Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen said the incident happened at about 6:20 p.m. in the 300 block of NE 600th Street near Carrollton. The man had been mowing close to the edge of the pond when the mower slipped into the water.

Authorities said the man was not submerged, but the position of the mower left him trapped. Carrollton Fire District Rescue responded and was able to free him from the equipment.

Officials said the man did not appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries. The incident serves as a reminder of the hazards that can develop quickly when mowing along pond banks and other steep or unstable ground.
