PITTSFIELD — The Pike County Sheriff’s Department is celebrating a major professional milestone for one of its own, while that same leader also prepares to seek the county’s top law enforcement post.

Chief Deputy Zachary Orr has graduated from the prestigious School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University in Evanston, completing the 22-week program between May 5 and September 29. The coursework provides advanced, college-level training in leadership, human resources, employee relations, organizational behavior, applied statistics, planning and policy development, as well as budgeting and resource allocation — all designed to prepare law enforcement leaders for complex challenges in today’s public safety environment. Orr was one of just 27 students in Class #612 to finish the program this year, earning recognition from peers and instructors for his commitment to professional development.

The achievement builds on a long career at the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, where Orr has served more than two decades, rising through roles from dispatcher and correctional officer to deputy and now chief deputy.

In addition to his recent training accomplishment, Orr has formally announced his candidacy for Pike County Sheriff in the 2026 election. A lifelong resident of the county, Orr said he believes his extensive law enforcement experience and deep community ties uniquely position him to lead the department, and he is seeking the Republican nomination to replace outgoing Sheriff David Greenwood.

Orr’s dual focus on both professional growth and community service reflects the evolving role of law enforcement leadership in the region, and many local residents and colleagues have noted the significance of his achievements as he steps toward a new chapter in public service.
