The Pittsfield Police Department has added a new narcotics K-9 to its force following a donation that made the program possible, strengthening the department’s ability to combat drug-related crime in the community.
Police Chief Michael Starman announced that a contribution from Whitetail Properties allowed the department to purchase and train the narcotics detection canine. The K-9, Maverick, completed training with handler Pittsfield Police Officer Mackenzie Moore at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Canine Academy and has been approved for service by Illinois authorities.
Chief Starman said the addition of the K-9 unit provides an important new tool for local law enforcement, enhancing the department’s ability to conduct drug enforcement operations and improve public safety.
Pittsfield Mayor Gary Mendenhall also acknowledged the community support behind the program. Officials said the new K-9 unit will assist officers with investigations, searches, and other law enforcement duties as part of ongoing efforts to deter illegal drug activity in Pittsfield.
