SILEX — The Silex R-1 School District is asking voters to consider a proposed tax levy aimed at maintaining student safety, protecting classroom quality, and keeping school facilities available for community use.
The proposal, known as PROP OWLS, would establish a $0.49 tax levy to help support local schools. District officials say the measure is focused on the belief that strong schools contribute directly to strong communities.
According to the district, local funding plays a key role in protecting class sizes and retaining quality teachers and staff. Officials also say the levy would support the safety and security of school facilities, including funding for an on-site School Resource Officer (SRO).
In addition to school operations and safety, the district says the levy would allow school buildings and facilities to remain open to youth organizations at no cost.
Community programs such as Khoury League and Little League Basketball currently rely on access to school facilities for practices and games, and district leaders say maintaining that access is an important part of community life in Silex.
District officials emphasize that schools often serve as gathering places for families and children outside of regular school hours, hosting activities that support youth development and community engagement.
Supporters of the proposal say the levy is designed to invest not only in education, but also in programs and safety measures that benefit students and the broader community.
More information about the proposal is expected to be shared with residents ahead of the vote.
