TWIN PIKES FOOTBALL PREVIEW: UNBEATEN TEAMS, CONFERENCE SHOWDOWNS AND KEY PLAYERS HIGHLIGHT WEEKEND ACTION

PITTSFIELD, IL — High school football enters a pivotal October weekend across western Illinois and northeastern Missouri, with undefeated teams guarding perfect records, conference contenders jockeying for position and other programs looking for the breakthrough that can change the final weeks of the season. Here's a detailed look at the local games scheduled for Friday, October 2, and Saturday, October 3.
PITTSFIELD LOOKS TO BUILD ON FIRST VICTORY AGAINST UNBEATEN MAROA-FORSYTH
Pittsfield returns home Friday night following its first victory of the season, a 25-14 decision over New Berlin/Franklin/Waverly. At 1-5, the Saukees face a substantial challenge from 6-0 Maroa-Forsyth, but their improved rushing production gives them something to build on.
Kody Anderson led Pittsfield with 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in last week's win. He also completed five of ten passes for 35 yards. Pittsfield amassed 360 rushing yards as a team, finding consistency on the ground that had been missing in earlier games.
Maroa-Forsyth arrives having outscored six opponents 330-59, including a 65-6 win over Riverton. The Trojans average 55 points per game, making sustained Saukees possessions and limiting big plays especially important. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Pittsfield.
BROWN COUNTY DEFENDS PERFECT RECORD AT BEARDSTOWN
The Brown County Hornets take a 6-0 record into Friday's road contest at 4-2 Beardstown. The Mount Sterling team has scored 334 points while allowing only 37, although last week's tense 30-27 win over previously unbeaten Camp Point Central showed the Hornets can win a close contest, too.
Quarterback Michael Kassing completed four of five passes for 108 yards against Central, including a 75-yard touchdown to Bradley Markert shortly before halftime. Beau Little rushed for 66 yards and scored twice, with one touchdown coming in the fourth quarter. The Hornets ran for 191 yards and recovered a late onside kick to protect their lead.
With the regular season entering October, the game gives Brown County another test of its unbeaten run and Western Illinois Valley Conference North standing. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Beardstown.
WEST CENTRAL HOSTS GREENFIELD-NORTHWESTERN IN MATCHUP OF 4-2 TEAMS
Winchester hosts a meeting of two 4-2 teams Friday as West Central welcomes Greenfield-Northwestern. The Western Illinois Valley Conference South matchup could prove important in the race for a strong finish.
West Central shut out Pleasant Hill-Western 18-0 last week behind 315 rushing yards. Eli Crain rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown and intercepted two passes on defense. Anthony Hance added two rushing scores and 42 yards.
Greenfield-Northwestern is coming off a 14-3 loss to unbeaten Calhoun. Quarterback Ty Bowman rushed for 41 yards and completed six passes for 26 yards, while Landon Albrecht connected on a 38-yard field goal. The Tigers finished with 98 total yards, so an offensive rebound will be a focus against West Central. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.
PLEASANT HILL-WESTERN WELCOMES NORTH GREENE
Pleasant Hill-Western returns home at 1-5 to meet winless North Greene (0-6) Friday night. Both teams are seeking a morale-building result as the season enters its final weeks.
The Wolves held West Central scoreless through halftime last Friday before losing 18-0. Talon Waters completed 11 of 16 passes for 82 yards but threw two interceptions; Pleasant Hill-Western finished with 147 yards of offense.
Protecting the football, extending drives and converting promising defensive stops into points will be priorities against the Spartans. North Greene is also seeking a breakthrough following a difficult start. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pleasant Hill.
CALHOUN GOES FOR OUTRIGHT SOUTH DIVISION TITLE AT CARROLLTON
Unbeaten Calhoun (6-0) visits Carrollton (3-3) on Saturday with an outright Western Illinois Valley Conference South Division championship at stake. The Warriors clinched at least a share of the title with a 14-3 win over Greenfield-Northwestern last weekend, which also marked head coach Aaron Elmore's 100th career coaching victory.
Quarterback Earl Elmore completed ten of 21 passes for 131 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to Lane Eilerman. Jacob Brannan rushed for 149 yards and a short touchdown, while Charlie Goode contributed another 93 rushing yards.
Calhoun amassed 418 yards and 22 first downs while holding Greenfield-Northwestern to 98 yards and five first downs. Carrollton will need to disrupt that balance between the Warriors' passing and running attacks to protect its home field. The contest is scheduled for Saturday in Carrollton.
BOWLING GREEN TRAVELS TO VAN-FAR
In Missouri action, Bowling Green (3-2) travels to Vandalia to face Van-Far (1-4) after defeating neighboring Louisiana 48-7. That strong showing followed a wild 76-54 defeat to North Callaway, highlighting both the Bobcats' scoring potential and the importance of defensive consistency.
Van-Far fell 62-30 to Montgomery County last Friday after trailing 48-14 at halftime. The Indians continued to put points on the board after the break but will need a more complete defensive effort against Bowling Green.
The Bobcats will try to reproduce last week's production without allowing the game to develop into another high-scoring shootout. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in Vandalia.
LOUISIANA SEEKS BOUNCE-BACK AGAINST NORTH CALLAWAY
Louisiana takes its 4-1 record to Kingdom City Friday after suffering its first loss, 48-7 against Bowling Green. The Bulldogs had opened the season with four straight victories and now face a dangerous North Callaway offense.
North Callaway is 3-2 after losing 84-50 to Palmyra. The Thunderbirds previously defeated Bowling Green 76-54 and have scored 250 points in five games, an average of 50 per contest. They have also allowed 195 points.
Louisiana has scored 166 points this season, averaging 33.2 per game. Managing possessions, limiting sudden scoring swings and finishing drives will be critical if the Bulldogs are to get back on track. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
OCTOBER FOOTBALL SETS UP HIGH-STAKES FINISH
With October underway, Friday's contests will shape conference races and late-season momentum. Brown County and Calhoun are protecting undefeated records, while West Central and Greenfield-Northwestern meet with identical marks and plenty to play for.
Elsewhere, Pittsfield and Pleasant Hill-Western are chasing continued improvement, and Bowling Green and Louisiana seek to build on opposite results in last week's rivalry meeting. RiverNewsLive and WBBA B97.5 will continue following the teams, players and results across the Twin Pikes throughout the season.
