BARRY, Ill. — The Barry and Western school communities are rallying around a recent Western High School graduate who was seriously injured in a Friday afternoon crash.

Sam Oitker, a recent graduate of Western High School, was involved in the accident late Friday afternoon. Community members gathered Saturday to support Oitker and his family with prayer, donations, and encouragement during what has become an emotional weekend for the Barry area.

The gathering came shortly after the Western softball team held a parade celebrating the first regional championship in program history. After the celebration, many community members came together at the school gym to show support for Oitker and his family.

Friends and classmates described Sam as someone known and loved throughout the community, calling him energetic, kind, and full of life. The show of support reflected the close-knit nature of Barry and the Western school district, where students, families, and neighbors often come together quickly in difficult moments.

According to an update shared by the Western Wildcats Facebook page, Sam was listed as stable while doctors continue monitoring injuries involving his brain, liver, and spleen.

Official details about the crash have not yet been released. The Pike County Sheriff’s Office had not provided additional public information as of Saturday.

The crash comes after a difficult year for Pike County families, with multiple serious crashes involving local high school students. Community members said Saturday’s gathering was about standing together, supporting the Oitker family, and reminding Sam that his hometown is behind him.

Further updates will be shared as more official information becomes available.
