BOWLING GREEN — After its first weekend open to the public, Bowling Green park officials say the new splash pad is off to a busy start — but they are asking families to help make sure the attraction stays safe, working, and available for everyone.
Officials thanked parents who reported when the splash pad was working or not working during the first weekend. They said the system is still being adjusted and that the computerized controls may take more time to fully sort out.
Park officials also issued several reminders after seeing children hanging on equipment, swinging from fixtures, running, throwing balls, and treating parts of the splash pad roughly. They said the equipment is not meant to be climbed on or used as a play structure, and parents are being asked to talk with children about safety and responsibility.
Officials emphasized that the splash pad is not a babysitter. Children who are dropped off are not supervised unless a parent or guardian is present. Because the splash pad is expected to draw younger children as well, families are being asked to make sure kids are considerate of others and avoid behavior that could knock someone down or cause an injury.
There are also a few maintenance items being addressed. Officials say the bottom of the slide is beginning to chip slightly, and they are looking for a solution. If the issue worsens, the slide may be roped or taped off until repairs can be made. The red hoop feature is also waiting on new nozzles so it can work correctly.
The park board is also reminding visitors to use the splash pad’s on button gently, saying it only needs to be pressed and should not be hit or punched. The splash pad hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The system will not run overnight, and the bathrooms and gates will be locked after hours.
Officials say the Bowling Green Park Board and the City of Bowling Green are excited to offer the new splash pad at no cost to the public, but they are asking residents to treat it with care so it can last for years to come.
