MOUNT STERLING — Brown County student athletes were recognized this week at the Illinois State Capitol following a standout year across multiple sports programs.

State Senator Jil Tracy of Quincy honored the athletes during a presentation in Springfield on Wednesday, highlighting what she called an exceptional year for Brown County schools.

Brown County High School’s football team was among those recognized after finishing the season with an 11-3 record and earning a second-place finish in the program’s first-ever state championship appearance.

The varsity girls basketball team was also honored after placing third in the state, while the junior high programs added to the success. The seventh-grade girls basketball team completed a perfect 26-0 season for the second straight year and captured a state championship, while the eighth-grade team finished 25-2 and earned a second-place finish.

During the recognition, Tracy praised the athletes for their dedication, teamwork, and school pride, while also acknowledging the role of coaches, families, and school leaders in supporting their success.

The visit to Springfield concluded with a celebration for the students following the ceremony.
