HARDIN — A false threat involving claims of an armed individual and explosive devices triggered a major law enforcement response and lockdown at Calhoun High School Wednesday afternoon, but authorities say students and staff were never in immediate danger.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Calhoun High School at approximately 12:11 p.m. Wednesday after an unknown person contacted the school claiming he was on the way to campus armed with an AR-15-style rifle and explosive devices. School administrators immediately placed the building on lockdown while emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, along with assistance from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, quickly secured the campus perimeter and launched an investigation into the threat. After a full search and assessment, authorities determined the threat was not credible, and no weapons or explosive devices were found on campus. The lockdown was then lifted, and officials confirmed that all students and staff were safe.
Sheriff’s officials say the incident appears to be a swatting-style false report designed to trigger a major emergency response. Authorities say incidents like this create significant disruption, place strain on emergency resources, and create fear for students, families, and the community.
The investigation into who made the false threat remains active. The sheriff’s office says additional law enforcement presence will remain at the school as a precaution while the investigation continues. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
