MT. STERLING — A Hunnewell, Missouri man has been sentenced in Brown County, Illinois, following his arrest in Mt. Sterling after a violent confrontation with law enforcement during the summer of 2024.

According to Brown County Circuit Court records, Ryan M. Edlin, 42, appeared in court Thursday and entered a guilty plea to Class A misdemeanor resisting a peace officer.

As part of an open plea agreement, several more serious charges were dismissed, including Class 2 felony aggravated battery to a peace officer, Class 2 felony attempting to disarm a police officer, and Class 4 felony resisting a peace officer. The court sentenced Edlin to 364 days in the Brown County Jail, to be served at the Menard County Jail in Petersburg, with credit given for 100 days already served, along with fines and court costs.

Edlin was arrested on June 24, 2024, at his parents’ home on East Street in Mt. Sterling while officers were executing a Missouri felony arrest warrant related to allegations of money laundering, theft, forgery, and deceptive business practices. At the time, authorities reported that Edlin ran into the residence and fought with officers during the arrest, resulting in injuries to law enforcement personnel.

Previous reporting indicated Edlin and other family members had been under investigation for several months following a criminal complaint filed by a hog market in Monroe County, Missouri, alleging more than $3.5 million in embezzlement.

Missouri court records show Edlin was sentenced on September 4, 2025, to five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on charges connected to the original warrant. A related civil judgment also ordered him to repay more than $164,000.

The Brown County case stems solely from the incident involving law enforcement during the Mt. Sterling arrest.
