CARROLLTON -- A Greene County man has been sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty in a methamphetamine possession case.
Geoffrey J. Scott, 45, appeared before Judge Zachary Schmidt on Monday, June 1, and pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of more than 15 grams but less than 100 grams of methamphetamine, a Class 1 felony. Scott received an eight-year prison sentence, with credit for 42 days already served. He was also recommended for substance abuse programming while incarcerated.
Two additional felony charges were dismissed as part of the negotiated resolution of the case.
Greene County State’s Attorney Craig Grummel said the sentence reflects the seriousness of possessing a significant amount of methamphetamine, Scott’s criminal history, and the need to protect the community from continued criminal conduct.
Grummel also acknowledged the impact addiction can have on families and encouraged individuals struggling with addiction to seek help through available treatment providers, recovery programs, and community resources before drug use leads to additional harm or criminal consequences.
The case was investigated by the Carrollton Police Department, with assistance from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the White Hall Police Department.
