MISSOURI — Missouri residents who use unstaffed state conservation shooting ranges could be required to purchase a small game permit under a new proposal from the Missouri Department of Conservation.
MDC says the permit proposal follows increased damage and misuse at more than 35 unstaffed firearms shooting ranges across the state. Conservation officials say some users have damaged range signs, booths and other infrastructure, while also leaving behind spent shells, targets and other litter.
Under the proposal, users of MDC-owned unstaffed firearms shooting ranges would be required to have a valid small game permit. Existing age and disability exemptions would remain in effect. The proposed requirement would not apply to partner ranges or MDC’s five staffed shooting ranges.
For Missouri residents, an annual small game permit begins at $11.50. Nonresident options include a $16 daily small game permit or a $108.50 annual permit.
The Missouri Conservation Commission gave initial approval to the proposed change during its May 29 meeting in Washington, Missouri. MDC will accept public comments on the proposal from July 16 through August 14 before the Commission considers final action at its September 11 meeting.
If given final approval, the new permit requirement would take effect February 28, 2027.
