MISSOURI — The State of Missouri is taking Dollar General to court over allegations the discount retailer has been overcharging customers at the register compared to shelf prices, with a trial now set for late July. The lawsuit stems from a multi-agency investigation that checked prices on thousands of items at stores across the state, finding that more than half of locations inspected had pricing discrepancies, most often charging customers more than advertised.
State officials say even small differences in pricing can add up significantly over time, potentially impacting thousands of Missouri shoppers. Investigators documented discrepancies on everyday items, with some prices ringing up higher by more than a dollar per product. The state argues the issue is widespread and ongoing, not isolated incidents.
Dollar General has responded by saying it is committed to accurate pricing and gives store employees the ability to correct issues at checkout when identified. The company also points to internal efforts to regularly update pricing, while some industry observers say staffing challenges may contribute to the problem.
If the state prevails, Missouri could seek financial damages and require changes to how the company handles pricing, with a decision expected later this summer following the trial.
