PITTSFIELD — Pike County Chief Deputy Zachary L. Orr has completed a national leadership program focused on jail administration and correctional operations.
Orr, who serves with the Pike County, Illinois Sheriff’s Department, graduated from Class 56 of the National Jail Leadership Command Academy in Huntsville, Texas. The academy is a nationally recognized leadership development program designed to prepare current and future jail leaders for the challenges of managing correctional facilities and public safety organizations.
The program brings together correctional professionals from across the United States for training in leadership, organizational effectiveness, and jail administration. One of the key responsibilities of a county sheriff’s office is the operation and oversight of the county jail, requiring leadership in areas including inmate supervision, staff development, fiscal management, strategic planning, and correctional operations.
During the academy, Orr completed an intensive curriculum covering essential leadership, self-awareness, managing with data, internal agency culture, collaboration, workforce development, crucial conversations, mission and values, budget planning, strategic planning, leading change, and group problem-solving.
Class 56 included correctional leaders from Maryland, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, Virginia, Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Washington. The academy also gave participants an opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss best practices in jail administration and leadership.
Orr said completing the National Jail Leadership Command Academy was a tremendous opportunity to learn from experienced correctional leaders from across the country, exchange ideas, and develop strategies that can be applied to improve jail operations and leadership within the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.
The department says the training supports its ongoing commitment to professional development, leadership growth, operational excellence, and safe, effective correctional services.
Orr has served in law enforcement for more than 27 years and currently serves as Chief Deputy of the Pike County, Illinois Sheriff’s Department.
