Pike County, Illinois — Dry conditions across the region have prompted officials to place all of Pike County, Illinois under a county-wide burn ban as fire danger increases.
County authorities confirm the burn ban is in effect through March 31 due to a combination of low humidity, dry vegetation and periodic winds that significantly increase the risk of grass and brush fires. The order prohibits open burning throughout
Pike County, Illinois, including brush piles, leaves and yard waste. Propane and gas grills used for cooking are generally permitted but should be used with caution.
Earlier Thursday, the New Canton Fire Protection District in Pike County, Illinois also issued an immediate burn ban within its district, reinforcing the county-wide restrictions. Fire officials say recent dry weather has created conditions where even small fires can spread quickly and become difficult to control.
Several surrounding fire districts in the broader coverage area are monitoring conditions closely and have either issued similar bans or strongly advised residents to postpone any non-essential outdoor burning. Officials emphasize that sparks from debris burning, campfires, welding or equipment can ignite dry grass within seconds.
Residents are urged to comply fully with the burn ban and remain alert for updates as weather conditions change. RiverNewsLive will continue to monitor announcements from Pike County, Illinois and neighboring districts.
