MEREDOSIA — Flood concerns are increasing along the Illinois River as water levels continue to rise, prompting a flood warning set to take effect tonight and remain in place through Wednesday of next week.
The warning, issued by the National Weather Service in St. Louis, highlights growing risks at multiple points along the river, particularly in Meredosia and Beardstown.
At Meredosia, flood stage begins at 17 feet, with impacts expected at the local boat dock when levels reach 17.4 feet. The river is forecast to crest at approximately 17.8 feet Friday morning, pushing it above flood stage and increasing the likelihood of localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Further south in Beardstown, concerns center on seepage issues within the Lost Creek Drainage and Levee District once river levels reach 18 feet. The river there is projected to crest at 18.2 feet early Friday afternoon.
As of the latest readings, the Illinois River stood at 17.4 feet in Beardstown this morning, already nearing critical levels, while Meredosia measured 16.2 feet last night and continues to rise.
Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor conditions closely and be prepared for potential impacts as the river approaches and exceeds flood stage later this week.
