ROODHOUSE — The Roodhouse Fire Protection District responded to a sharp increase in calls during February, handling 34 incidents compared to just 12 calls in January, according to the department’s monthly report.
Of the February calls, 20 were EMS-related, making up the majority of responses. Fire crews also handled two structure fires, one motor vehicle crash, one burn injury or brush fire involving a person, six brush or field fires, one outside or ordinance-related fire, and three standby assignments. Several calls involved mutual aid, either assisting neighboring departments or receiving assistance when needed.
Fire officials are reminding residents to use caution with outdoor burning as spring approaches. Dry conditions and wind can quickly turn small fires into dangerous situations. The department advises monitoring weather conditions, ensuring fires are attended at all times, avoiding burning on red flag warning days, and conducting burns during daylight hours. Officials also recommend notifying dispatch or contacting a department officer prior to burning to prevent unnecessary emergency responses.
The district also placed a new pumper tanker into service in February. The vehicle, designated Unit 2221, is already responding to calls within the district and is expected to enhance fire suppression capabilities.
In addition, the department has launched a Queen of Hearts drawing fundraiser, with weekly drawings supporting operational costs and equipment needs.
Mutual aid activity during the month included assistance involving White Hall, Greenfield, Winchester, Scottville/Modesto, and Murrayville/Woodson.
So far in 2026, the district has responded to 46 calls. The department handled 311 total calls in 2025.
