GOLDEN — A powerful storm that moved through Adams County Wednesday night has been confirmed as a tornado, leaving significant damage behind at a family farm near Golden. The National Weather Service says the EF-1 tornado packed winds up to 97 miles per hour, stretched about 50 yards wide, and stayed on the ground for less than a mile.
The storm hit as the family took shelter around 9:30 p.m. after noticing signs of a possible tornado, even though no warning had been issued at that time. When they emerged, they found their barn completely destroyed, with 22 to 23 cows inside. Some livestock were rescued, but the full extent of losses remains unclear.
Additional structures on the property, including a shed, were also flattened. Debris from the storm—metal, wood, and other materials—was scattered across the area. Neighbors quickly stepped in Thursday to help the family begin cleanup efforts.
Damage was also reported about a quarter mile away, where another property saw car windows blown out and part of a roof torn away. Emergency officials initially worked to determine whether the damage was caused by straight-line winds or a tornado before confirmation came later Thursday.
Despite the widespread destruction, no injuries were reported, something the family says they are extremely grateful for.
