BARRY — New details have been released after a car and train collision seriously injured 18-year-old Sam Oitker, a recent Western High School graduate.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, Oitker was driving on State Highway 106 about two and a half miles west of Barry on Friday when his vehicle was struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern train at the railroad crossing near Smith Agri-Service.

Oitker was reportedly on his way home from work at the time of the crash. Emergency responders airlifted him to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Family members say Oitker has not yet regained consciousness. They are asking the community to continue praying while they focus on staying positive.

The Barry Fire Department, Pike County Ambulance Service and Air-Evac assisted the Pike County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Community support efforts are also underway for Oitker and his family. Donations may be made at the Western High School office, 401 McDonough Street in Barry, Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; The Place at 711 Mortimer; Milkey’s at 717 Mortimer; and Liberty Bank at 1001 Highway 106 in Barry.
